LOSERS

Joker? Hell, yeah!
Parasite? Well... I better write an opinion piece about it.

Press here to read my new article for Miista.

"...for me, the greatest problem in this work is that it seems to betray the intentions with which it’s been made. Regardless of the creators’ aspirations, the result is a story of poor and immoral people who take advantage of a rich family of mainly innocent people."

IS ART USELESS?

"In my previous post on this blog ('Intelligent, but artist,' January 15), I argued that the message subtly conveyed by news and headlines on this case was the following: 'This guy is intelligent, BUT he wants to study art.'

O, for Da Vinci’s sake! The taken-for-granted expectation that readers would grasp such a contraposition without further explanation could only mean that two ideas are widely assumed as true:

a. Artistic activities and accomplishments fall outside the realm of intelligence
b. The value of art for humanity (if it has any) is much lower that the value of science

. . .my opinion is that behind b lie (1) the equation of value with utility, (2) the equation of utility with medical and technoscientific utility and (3) the consideration of art, in its uselessness, as mere entertainment."

May the Muse speak trough me in my new article for Miista. You can read it here.

INTELLIGENT, BUT ARTIST

"While scientific intelligence tends to be conceived as a process of discovery directed and controlled by the scientist, artistic creativity tends to be perceived as moments of creation dependent of that diffuse thing called inspiration. These associations, at the same time, imply an image of the scientist as active in their search, with the artist being presented as a passive receptor. This opposition between intellectually active (responsible, controlling, rational, absolutely aware) scientists and intellectually passive (erratic, effortless, led by irrational impulses, subjected to randomness) artists lies behind the opposition intelligence / creativity presented at the beginning."
