REALITY AND DYSTOPIA. Thoughts after episode 1X07 of THE HANDMAID'S TALE. Spoiler-free

I refuse to refer to The Handmaid's Tale as a dystopia. The only reason why someone can be inclined to regard this show that way is because they are watching from a Western(ised) perspective: the action is situated in the West, where many assume its inhabitants to be far away from the dangers portrayed. But such dangers as fundamentalism taking control of society in the face of a crisis, women charged with the weight of preserving what are supposed to be the core traditions of a community, LGTBQ+ people persecuted and killed, females obliged to comply with their “biological destiny”, systematic rapes, fugitives trying desperately to cross a border to be safe from physical, psychological or mortal harms (many of them carrying their kids), parents and children separated, etc., not only are happening right now in many parts of the world, but are happening in the West itself — perhaps in less obvious and systematic ways, perhaps in broad daylight but suffered by non-Westerners or those so conceived.

Me niego a referirme a El cuento de la criada como una distopía. La única razón por la que alguien se puede sentir inclinado a calificar esta serie como tal se debe a que la mira desde una perspectiva occidental(izada): la acción se sitúa en Occidente, de cuyos habitantes generalmente se asume una gran lejanía en relación con los peligros retratados. Sin embargo, situaciones como el fundamentalismo tomando el control de una sociedad en crisis, mujeres cargadas con el peso de preservar las supuestas tradiciones centrales de una comunidad y obligadas a cumplir con su "destino biológico", personas LGTBQ+ perseguidas y asesinadas, violaciones sistemáticas, fugitivos tratando desesperadamente de cruzar una frontera para salvarse de daños físicos, psicológicos o mortales (muchos de ellos llevando niños consigo), padres e hijos separados, etc., suceden ahora mismo no sólo "en muchas partes del mundo", sino en el propio Occidente; quizás de maneras menos obvias o sistemáticas, quizás a plena luz del día pero sufridas por personas no occidentales o aquéllas así concebidas.
